When it comes to eye safety, in some cases, regular safety glasses will be very suitable for your needs. However, in some cases, you may need to use safety goggles for full protection.

So how do you choose safety glasses or safety goggles? The following is an explanation of these differences.

For most eye protection needs, you may want to wear safety glasses. The safety frame, safety lenses, and side shields will provide adequate protection and safety from flying objects. Safety glasses can protect your eyes from objects that may scratch, puncture or injure your eyes, and have been tested to withstand high-intensity shocks. Safety frames are tested to ensure that they can withstand the impact from a 1/4-inch steel ball traveling at a speed of 150 fps (feet per second) without shifting the lens. The safety lenses of safety glasses have been tested and can withstand the impact from a 1/4" steel ball shot at a speed of 150 fps.

Although safety glasses can protect the eyes from high-intensity impacts, they cannot completely protect the eyes from all elements in the air because there are very small gaps at the top, sides, and bottom. In many work and sports environments, safety goggles are a better choice to provide complete eye protection. Safety goggles provide complete 360-degree coverage around the eyes and include a strap to help keep the goggles firmly attached to your face. They usually also contain breathing or ventilation holes to help with the airflow.

In most cases, you will not wear prescription safety goggles. Most people wear ordinary prescription glasses or prescription safety glasses with safety goggles on them for the added protection. Here is an example of when you would want to wear safety goggles on your glasses or safety glasses. If you are grinding metal, you don't want debris metal fragments to damage your safety glasses. Especially on glass lenses, metal fragments will stick to the lenses, burn the lenses and leave dents on the lenses. And with the metal fragments flying through the air, it would be easy for them to whisp around your glasses and into your eyes. With the 360 degrees fit around the glasses, your safety glass lenses and your eyes are completely protected.

When trying to decide whether you need safety glasses or safety goggles, the answer might be both. But it really depends on whether you need a prescription to see clearly, and whether you have ever dealt with fine particles or debris that can be airborne.
